Loudoun County Speeding Ticket Fines

What to Do if You Are Stopped for a Speeding Ticket

In Virginia, speeding tickets are taken seriously by law enforcement authorities.  As your speed increases, potential fines increase and so do the number of points assessed against your driver’s license by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).  The basic point schedule for a Leesburg speeding ticket is as follows:

  • 1 – 9 MPH over the speed limit, 3 points
  • 10 – 19 MPH over the limit, 4 points
  • More than 20 MPH over the limit, 6 points

Those stopped for speeding will pay $5.00 for every MPH over the speed limit, along with court fees (typically around $62.00 in Virginia).

If you pay the fine on your speeding ticket in Leesburg, or if you are convicted in court, these points are reported to DMV. If you accumulate more than 18 points in 12 months, or 24 points in 24 months, your license will be suspended.  Insurance companies access DMV records and can increase your automobile insurance rates if they find you are an unsafe driver.
